How Many Meals Should A 4 Month Kitten Eat?

Q: How many meals should a 4 month kitten eat?

A: Kittens are not like adult cats, in that their digestive system is still developing so they may not yet adhere to 'meal times'. Adult cats can go without food for short periods without serious health effects, but kittens are very delicate and need to at least have the opportunity to eat when they want. Obviously you can't leave wet food out all day for hygiene reasons, but a bowl of dried food that is constantly topped up will allow a kitten to nibble when they want.

As the kitten grows and is able to ingest larger wet meals (starting with a breakfast), you should find that the amount of nutrients and energy contained in these single sitting meals will be enough to sustain your kitten for longer periods of time, and even though the dry food is available, the kitten will ignore it. Slowly the kitten will get to a stage where it develops an expectation of 'mealtimes', and that will be the process sorted out. If however this process does not work with your kitten consult a vet to see if your kitten is suffering from any problems. Bearing in mind that you should visit the vet twice during the first few months of its life you will be able to chat with your vet about your kittens nourishment as a matter of course.
