I’ve had my older cat for about 4 years now, and he’s been relatively healthy. I bought a new 8 month old kitty in December to keep him company. Since, then they’ve both been battling soft stools and diarrhea. My older cat also started acting very irritable.
First they were treated with a week of antibiotics, which I had a hard time getting them to eat. They also had a liquid medicine for worms.
That seemed to work until I stopped the medicine. Soft, smelly, yellow stools came back, and my older cat got very irritiable. MY vet then recommended a bland diet for a month. They barely went to the bathroom on the bland diet, and they both seemed in good spririts. My older cat lost some weight. He needed to anyway. But once I started trying the regular cat food, the soft poo/diarrhea came back again.
So, the vet then tested for parasites again, and found nothing. He gave them antibiotics for a month, combined with a bland diet. Both working very well.
Once I started them on a new dry food, they started pooping normally for about a day or two. Then I found something in the stool that was white and looked like a ribbon. I thought that it could be tapeworm, but I shrugged it off, thinking one of them ate something weird.
The next day though, they started having really bad diarrhea! The vet was going to put them back on antibiotics, until I told him about the ribbon thing.
He then gave me a topical tapeworm treatment, and of course I think the cats shook a lot of it off when I applied it.
I don’t know what to think about this anymore. How will I know if the tapeworm treatment works? They took it about 3 days ago, and are only eating boiled chicken again, but they are still having some small squirts. And to make matters worsre, they are always stepping in it and spreading it around the house. UGH!!
They don’t seem to have the type of tapeworm that releases mobile segmentsm thankfully! Help, I’m afraid that they’re not getting all the nutrients they need on the bland diet.
