A common worm in many cats today is the tapeworm. The tapeworm is visually recognized by its long flat appearance. The tapeworm in a cat is usually broken up into multiple sections. Upon inspection by the cat owner, it has been reported that many owners can visually see the tapeworms moving around your cats anal area. These sections of tapeworm are actually alive and have broken off from the main adult tapeworm. If these particular segments of tapeworms have died, they will look like grains of rice that have not been cooked. Again, as we had mentioned earlier, some of the tapeworms get into your cat when they consume an infected flea. Other tapeworms can get into your cats digestive system when they consume a mouse or similar rodent that has become infected with the tapeworm.
Another type of worm that is very common in cats is the roundworm. In reality, the roundworm is the most common type of worms in cats. The roundworm is generally 3 to 4 inches long, and is very thin almost looking like spaghetti. There are actually two types of roundworms and they usually gain entry into your cats intestinal tract by either infected feces of other cats, or the milk of an infected mother passed on to their kittens.
Again, if your cat is an outdoor cat, it will be more prone to developing cat worms. If your cat comes into contact frequently with the feces of other animals that are infected with worms, then there is a very high likelihood that your cat will become infected with cat worms as well. Lets not forget, cats enjoy hunting, especially for small rodents that are quite frequently infected with worms, and subsequently consumed by the cat.
Fortunately the treatment for cat worms is available to most pet owners today. There are many cat owners that prefer natural remedies in treating cat worms. Some research has shown that treating your cat with such herbs as garlic has proved beneficial in destroying the worms. In reality, the best method for eliminating cat worms is a visit to your local veterinarian. Your veterinarian most likely will perform extensive blood work and analysis which will determine the extent of the infection with worms.
Cat worms can stress the cat greatly and should not be taken lightly. The longer the worms stay in the cats intestinal track the more harm that can be done. Cat worms are still frequent today. Pet owners should take adequate precautions from allowing cat worms to develop. If you suspect that your cat has become infected with cat worms, seek medical care immediately, as early intervention for cat worms will help stop the infestation from multiplying.
